Spells to silence gossip, lies and slander.
By Matthew Galea

The basic rules of the craft are ‘whatever you send out, you get back times three,’ and that should definitely be kept in mind when you’re contemplating getting revenge on an ex or stepping over a hardworking colleague to nab a promotion. But if you’re being unfairly targeted by gossipers, liars and other toxic people, there are certain rituals you can use to take your power back and protect yourself from lies. As long as your intentions are pure and your reasons are fair, cast away. More power to ya, mate.
Chill the fuck out spell
Everyone knows the ol’ ‘Put ‘em in the freezer’ trick where you write your target’s name on paper and chuck it in the freezer to put them on ice, so to speak. But for me, that just seems way too easy and I’ve always liked to apply additional magical properties to this technique to add more power.
You will need:
-
A piece of paper
-
A black pen
-
White candles
-
Black pepper
-
Ground gloves
-
A small container
-
A freezer (duh)

Preparation:
Light the candles and write the name of the gossiper(s) on the paper, adding their middle name and birth date if you can. If the issue is more a situation rather than a specific person, write that instead / as well, using as much detail as you can and focusing on the pain it has caused you as you write. Fold it, concentrating on the matter at hand with each fold, until it’s as small as possible. Place it in a small container and sprinkle it with black pepper and ground cloves. Leave it in the back of the fridge until you feel the matter has been resolved, then you may discard it.

Clove me not spell
Also known as the clove and light spell or banishing gossip with cloves spell. Simple ol’ cloves have the mystical ability to stop gossip when applied properly. Don’t you just clove it, I mean, love it when the ingredients you need are already in your pantry?
You will need:
-
Whole cloves
-
A mortar and pestle
Preparation:
Grind cloves into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle, focusing on the gossip that’s being spun and how it’s affected you as you grind. When complete, dust your body with the cloves (especially when going into situations where gossip may arise) as well as a particular place. For example, I was once worried that people at work were gossiping about me, so I formed a circle of clove dust around my desk at work. Sure enough, shortly after, the gossip stopped. And if it doesn’t, at the very least your care factor for it will.

Gossip halting powder
Sometimes the gossip is close to home – our own families or housemates can be guilty of running their mouths. We’re all human. But when it gets too much, I recommend nipping it in the bud in the most subtle way. This is an old school formula that can be used to keep a place free from gossip and also protect those who cross the powder.
You will need:
-
Dragon’s blood
-
Sea salt
-
Frankincense
-
Myrrh
-
Mortar and pestle
Preparation:
Grind an even quantity of each of the above ingredients in a mortar and pestle. Sprinkle your home or workplace with the powder, without anyone seeing you. Make sure you don’t overdo it on the sprinkling, though. A witchy friend of mine once got sprung after her colleague noticed a huge quantity of powder in the office. You want to use a subtle amount. Less is more in this case.
Candle spell to stop a liar
Is there anything worse than a liar? No, the answer is no. So if you find yourself on the receiving end of a damaging lie (it happens to us all), heed this spell to fuck them right off. Violets are known to be the plant of truth, so get your hands on either the oil or the plant itself to stop the lies and let the truth shine through.

You will need:
-
A white candle
-
A toothpick or carving knife
-
Violets (either the plant or the oil)
Preparation:
Carve the candle with the name and birth date of the person who is lying. Dress the candle with violet oil and / or sprinkle it with violet leaves. Light the candle and stare into the flames, envisioning the liar. As the candle burns down, the truth will be revealed. Obviously do not leave your candle unattended to burn all the way down, so this may take a few sessions to work. Redress the candle in each session and focus, focus, focus. Then when it’s burned all the way down, discard of the remnants.
Anti-harassment spell
Has the issue progressed from idle gossip to full-blown harassment? The gorgeous holly plant is believed to have properties that makes your target either quit their behaviour and act with kindness or simply go away (hey, I wonder if that’s why it’s a beloved Christmas ornament? God knows it’s needed when the extended family gets together).
Interesting anecdote, I’ve been practicing this spell for years and it was much harder back in the day as it calls for a photo of the person harassing you and before social media, this was quite difficult to come by. Now, you can simply print off a pic from social media and boom, your spell’s ready to go.
You will need:
-
A photo of your target
-
A piece of paper
-
A pen
-
Holly leaves
-
A cup of freshly brewed, extra strong black coffee
-
A glass jar
Preparation:
After obtaining a photo of the person, stare at it for a while and focus on how they have wronged you. Then write their name on the sheet of paper, and place both the paper and the photo in the jar. Add a bunch of holly leaves. Pour the coffee over all the elements in the jar. Stare into the jar and speak your desires into it, being specific about what needs to stop. Seal the jar tightly with the lid and keep it in a safe place where no one can find it.
